RWANDA Football Federation (Ferwafa) has laid out plans to beef up the Amavubi Stars’ technical staff as the country intensifies preparations to host the 2016 CHAN finals tournament.

"We are planning to beef up the technical staff of our national team. We want to find the best approach to build a solid national team which would be able to challenge for the title, but first we need to have a solid coaching team,” Ferwafa vice president Veduste Kayiranga confirmed the development on Wednesday.

Kayiranga never gave away too much regarding the fate of current coach Eric Nshimiyimana and his assistant Jean Baptiste Kayiranga whose one-year contract is due to expire in March.

Nshimiyimana’s one-year tenure has not brought much success as the team’s performances remain dismal. The senior national team was eliminated from 2014 CHAN qualifiers by Ethiopia on penalties.

Rwanda lost 1-0 away in Addis Ababa but managed to get their revenge by a similar score in the return leg in Kigali. Amavubi also staged a poor performance at the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Nairobi after losing to hosts Kenya 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

Nshimiyimana’s team had lost 1-0 to both Uganda and Sudan and their only win was against Eritrea 1-0 in the group stages.

In the same month of December, Rwanda slipped six places further in Fifa world rankings – to 133th – and remains one of the lowest ranked countries both on the African continent and in the world.
