Rwandan basketball player Jean Jacques Wilson Nshobozwabyosenumukiza on Monday, August 28, donated various sports equipment to young players as part of helping them to fulfil their career ambitions.

The 24-year-old national team player handed over the equipment which he bought from the prize money awarded to him after winning the Basketball Africa League (BAL)'s Ubuntu Trophy, an award that recognises the contribution of players to the community.

He won the trophy in March this year in Dakar, Senegal.

The Ubuntu Trophy celebrates one BAL player who has made an outstanding effort and impact in the community during the BAL season.

The trophy, which is accompanied by a prize money worth $5,000, was awarded to Nshobozwa in recognition of his efforts to promote youngsters who play basketball at Club Rafiki (CR), a centre which contributed to his basketball breakthrough from his young age.

The APR point guard has, since August 22, organized a week-long basketball camp dubbed ‘Ubuntu camp’ bringing together about 500 different children, both boys and girls, where they have been undergoing daily training sessions at the Nyamirambo-based club.

He bought them various equipment which they used during the camp. The kits, which include shoes, socks and balls, were part of the pledge he made after winning the Ubuntu Trophy in Dakar.

"After receiving the Ubuntu trophy, I had to reach out to the children who play at Club Rafiki, the place I grew up from. We organized a camp for children of different ages for about a week,” he told Times Sport.

"What we are going to do is to look for donors so that we can continue to provide equipment for children to help them play basketball," he added.

Nshobozwa acknowledged Club Rafiki’s role in becoming the player he is now while he also believes that more children training from the place can become great players in the future ahead.
