The Eastern province and the Trans-Nzoia County, Western Kenya, are planning to establish a long term partnership to promote socio-economic development.

This was revealed during a one-day tour of  Kayonza and Rwamagana districts by a delegation of  MPs and administrators from Trans-Nzoia County on Wednesday.

Trans-Nzoia  is located between Nzoia River and Mount Elgon in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya.

David Sifuna, the Speaker of Trans-Nzoia County Assembly, said the MPs had learnt lessons from the tour.

"We are overwhelmed by what we saw. Kenya lacks model villages. We intend to pass a legislation to create this kind of settlement back home,” he said.

Sifuna also hailed the respect for gender equality in the country.

"I am surprised that there is a female among the five governors that you have. In Kenya we have 47 Governors and none of them is a female and we have only three ladies out of  48 county speakers,” he said.

Sifuna invited his Rwandan counterpart to visit the Trans-Nzoia County, a breadbasket of Kenya.

"We have a lot in common with this province. Just like the Eastern Province, Trans-Nzoia County is Kenya’s bread basket.  We do not need to go to Europe, but learn from each other,” Sifuna said.

Odette Uwamariya, the Governor of Eastern Province, spoke highly of the mutual cooperation.
