RWANDA’S Fifa/Caf assistant referee Félicien Kabanda has been picked among referees for the 2014 World Cup by a Fifa Referees Committee meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.
Despite being out for the last two months with a hamstring injury, Kabanda has won the trust by the world football’s governing body, to officiate at the biggest football competition on earth.
Because of the injury sustained in November, the 42-year-old, after being appointed, missed taking charge of the second leg of the African Champions League final between hosts and holders Al Ahly of Egypt and South Africa’s Orlando Pirates.
He also missed the Fifa World Cup 2014 play-off match between hosts Nigeria and Ethiopia and Fifa Club World Cup finals held in December in Morocco.
Kabanda will work as the first assistant alongside Gambian (centre) referee Bakary Papa and Cameroonian Evariste Menkounde as second assistant referee.
The Fifa Referees Committee announced the list which comprises 25 referee trios and eight support duos representing 43 different countries for the Mundial.
"The referees selected for the World Cup in Brazil have been chosen based especially on their personality and their quality in football understanding by being able to read the game and the teams’ tactical approaches towards each game,” stated Fifa.
Nine African officials made it in the referees section with four others making it to the support category.
Europe provides nine of the 25 officiating teams, South America has five, Asia four, Africa and the Concacaf region three each and Oceania one.
