President Paul Kagame today arrived in the Angolan capital of Luanda ahead of the Fifth Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) due on Wednesday.
"President Kagame arrives in Luanda, Angola to attend ICGLR Heads of State Summit,” his office announced on Twitter on Tuesday.
Running under the theme, "Let’s promote peace, security, stability and development in the Great Lakes Region”, the summit was preceded by a series of preparatory sessions since January 10.
The earlier sessions included meetings for chiefs of intelligence services and general chiefs of defence staff, as well as defence and foreign ministers from the 12 countries comprising the ICGLR.
ICGLR, which played a key part in efforts to resolve the crisis that rocked the neighbouring DRC over the last two years, comprises Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic (CAR), Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
At the Luanda summit, Uganda is expected to hand over the bloc’s chair to the host country.
