Rubavu-based Vision Jeunesse and Mountain Classic Athletics Club of Gicumbi District dominated the national athletics youth championship held yesterday at Amahoro national stadium. Five clubs took part.

The championship was also serving as qualifier for this year’s Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Zone V championship to be held in Egypt next month.

Vision Jeunesse won the girls’ 100m and 200m as well as the boys’ 400m and 800m, while newly formed Mountain Classic claimed the girls’ 400m and the boys’ 100m, 200m and 1500m).

Sabine Uwase Ingabire of Vision Jeunesse won the girls’ 100 & 200m races, a feat which was repeated by Mountain Classic’s Steven Nkundimfura in the boys’ 100&200m races. 

Nyamasheke club won the girls’ 800m and 1500m, Rwamagana took the girl’s 3000m, while APR, led by starlet James Sugira cruised to victory in the boys’ 3000m category. SEC Academy didn’t appear despite being the sixth club to confirm their participation.

Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) Secretary General Johnson Rukundo said the competition, which attracted a relatively low turn up in terms of spectators, went well and according to plan. He noted that the final team for the ANOCA Zone V games would be announced in the coming days after a meeting of the federation’s technical team.
