African Evangelical Enterprises (AEE) last weekend started an HIV/Aids awareness campaign targeting adolescents. The campaign, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), aims at encouraging the youth to assume leadership roles in their respective schools and involve their peers in planning and implementing HIV/Aids awareness programmes.Speaking after a three-kilometre awareness march, Steven Rwamurangwa, the Coordinator of AEE, said focusing on youth would bring more impact for the community-based programme. He noted that the campaign was meant to educate the public about the impact of HIV/Aids on young people as well as highlight the good work young people are doing to fight the epidemic. He said the youngsters will through the campaign acquire skills and knowledge they need to protect themselves against the HIV/Aids scourge and other sexually transmitted infections."As teenagers learn about HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted infections, they are able to make informed decisions, protect themselves and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” he said.Claudine Mwamikazi, a Senior Five student at Kiziguro Secondary School said the training was timely, adding that many students are vulnerable to HIV/Aids.
