RUBAVU — Augustine Mpimbikiyimana, from the Ombudsman’s Office has said corruption in Rubavu district has reduced.

Mpimbikiyimana said this on Tuesday while meeting sector, Cell and district leaders in Gisenyi town.

This was at a meeting meant to discus the Ombudsman’s report on service delivery in the district. He noted that the district authority had tried to combat corruption cases even at the sector levels.

"Although there have been some malfunction  of some sector leaders who have not been submitting clear reports on their performances to the district authority, the report revealed that Rubavu district has taken a tremendous step especially in the fight against corruption,” Mpimbikiyimana said.

He added, "Our report established that most people in the district access various services from leaders without bribes. There have basically been limited corruption cases.”

According to the report, he said, few sectors of the district did not properly handle certain development projects such as clean water projects.

He appealed to sector leaders to always presented performance report periodically, saying it would help evaluate their achievements and failures.

"Sector and Cell leaders have a lot to do because they interact directly with their subjects. They should therefore do everything possible to provide better service delivery to the people,” he added. At the meeting, the district Mayor said community policing has contributed towards reducing crimes in the area.

"Community policing is a philosophy that promotes and supports organisational strategies to address the causes and fear of crime and social disorder through problem solving tactics and police community partnerships. The policy has so far yielded good results in most sectors,” he said. He urged local leaders to support the policy and share information on crime detection with the police.

"Improved security is one of the fundamental services we as leaders can deliver to our people and should be every leader’s responsibility for the betterment and development of the district,” he said.
