Editor,Reference is made to Catherine Gashegu’s article, "What of love, peace and understanding in 2014?” (The New Times, January 2).I wholly agree with the writer that ethnicity, tribe and other narrow identifiers should not be drivers of conflict. But what is not mentioned in the article is the admission that disagreements and conflict will always be part of any nation’s political dynamics. What matters is to set up institutional channels of regulating competing ideas and claims to power.

Intensified democratic debate and separation of powers (among the legislative, judiciary and executive) are the best way to prevent rebellions and war.Mushyo, Kigali
