Teachers to acquire business skills

Over 2,000 public school teachers have started training in entrepreneurship and financial management. The four-day training aims at equipping teachers with business skills like how to start and manage an enterprise, as well as preparing business plans to enable them set up and run income-generating projects profitably, Joseph Museruka, the managing director of Umwalimu SACCO, a savings and credit co-operative for teachers, said."The exercise is intended to empower and help teachers improve their socio-economic welfare through income-generating activities,” Museruka said.The four-day training, which started yesterday, is being conducted at sector level and targets 2,148 teachers from across the country.  Jean Marie Vianney Nzagahimana, the chairman Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda, said the training is in line with government’s efforts to link the teachers with financial services to boost their welfare. In 2012, the government injected Rwf5b into Umwalimu SACCO for on-lending to public teachers.                           Over 30,200 out of the 57,000 teachers have so far acquired loans from Mwalimu SACCO. The number is expected to increase to about 50,000 in 10 years.
