GASABO - The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has underlined security issues to 70 senior police officers, to be considered in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
The NEC President, Prof. Chrysologue Karangwa, told the officers yesterday at the National Police Headquarters in Kacyiru, that the general public and election observers need to be aware of how election disorders can mess up the whole process.
"We really need your extra support in these (election) days,” he appealed, urging them to be election security watchdogs.
Karangwa reminded them that they knew what was on the ground better than anybody, to avert what could disorganise or support the forthcoming election process.
The Acting Commissioner General of Police, Mary Gahonzire said that they had started doing their job and that some challenges had already started emerging.
"But through our community policing we hope to resolve them with the help of local communities,” Gahonzire assured the audience.
Among the local and international election observers are Commonwealth and European Community representatives.
