EAC Defence Liason Officers on sensitisation tour

KIGALI - A team of five East African Community Defence Liaison officers arrived in the country recently to sensitise various government officials on the status of defence cooperation in the EAC.

KIGALI - A team of five East African Community Defence Liaison officers arrived in the country recently to sensitise various government officials on the status of defence cooperation in the EAC. 

According to the Rwanda Military Spokesman Maj. Jill Rutaremara, the team will meet with senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of East African Community, Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) commanders, and officials of National Security Service (NSS) and Rwanda National Police (RNP). 

"They will also visit Rwanda Military Academy (Gako) and Electronic and Information Communications Technical Integrated (E-ICT) Centre in Kigali,” Rutaremara said.  

The East African Community Defence Liaison delegation is made up of Brig. Gen. Norbert Kalimba from Rwanda, Brig. Gen. Fred Tolit of Uganda, Brig. Salvatore Nahamana of Burundi, Col.Hilary Kioko of Kenya and Col. DT Matiku of Tanzania. 

The EAC Defence Liaison Unit was established at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha in 1998, and is manned by senior military officers, one from each of the partner states.

The Liaison Unit coordinates a number of defence activities covering areas of study on the establishment of Peace and Security Directorate among others.

The tour that started on July 28 ends today.
