KARONGI — Volunteers known as the Community Development Workers, in partnership the church, has offered training to volunteers who will educate residents about healthy livelihoods in Kibuye.

The Community Development Workers are part of the Peace Team, of the Saddle Back Church.

The trainees known as Community Development Volunteers (CDVs) were drawn from different Cells of Bwishyura sector, Karongi district.

The on-going training started last week, being conducted at different area churches. It attracted over 150 trainees out of 7,000 the total number targeted by the end of this year, according to Augustine Habimana, one of the facilitators.

"We have spent time visiting homes in the community teaching them about different development plans with more focus on health.

We weren’t many to cover a wide area that is why we need more workers,” said Habimana.

In the villages, the volunteers teach residents on eating balanced diet, having clean pit latrines, voluntarily testing for HIV/Aids and how to start income generating activities among others.

Members of the Community Development project also have plans of offering residents animals for livestock farming.
Apart from developmental issues, the volunteers also share faith issues with their audience. Habimana explained that they wanted to enhance the role of the church in development.
