Three New Times’ journalists are among the winners of this year’s Rwanda Journalism Development Awards. TNT’s Edwin Musoni, Frank Kanyesigye and Doreen Umutesi scooped awards in hard news and features categories. The Awards ceremony, held on Thursday night at Kigali Serena Hotel, the second of its kind in the country, aimed at celebrating the best of Rwanda’s journalism.
Three New Times’ journalists are among the winners of this year’s Rwanda Journalism Development Awards. TNT’s Edwin Musoni, Frank Kanyesigye and Doreen Umutesi scooped awards in hard news and features categories. The Awards ceremony, held on Thursday night at Kigali Serena Hotel, the second of its kind in the country, aimed at celebrating the best of Rwanda’s journalism.Long time freelance journalist Marie Louise Uwizeyimana scooped the journalist of the year award in the competition that attracted 203 entries. The New Times swept the Hard news category with Frank Kanyesigye and Edwin Musoni coming second and third, respectively.Doreen Umutesi, a Features writer with The New Times, was recognised in the features category where she emerged second runner-up.Fred Muvunyi ans Samuel Ngendahimana of Izuba Rirashe, a sister paper to The New Times, were also recognised. Veteran photojournalist George Baryamwisaki, emerged best photojournalist of the year. The photo of a businesswoman riding a bicycle with cassava for sale on the carrier and a child on her back won him the award.Emmanuel Munyarukumbuzi, from Rwanda Television, emerged the first runner-up in the best documentary category. His documentary was about a female veterinary Doctor who has been treating gorillas for more than 20 years.He was also awarded for a story he did about Africa’s youngest billionaire Ashish Thakkar.The winners received awards and cash. Now in its 2nd year, the Awards are supported by Rwanda Governance Board, One UN and Rwanda Journalists Association.
