Dilemma of street kids – prevention better than cure!

Dear editor,

The fears put forward [last week] by the senate over the plight of street children are, unfortunately, indisputable - especially their mistreatment in the Gikondo transit center. Allow me to stress that the real remedy lies in tackling the problem from the roots.

Unfortunately, as it is in most cases, when we look at the plight of street children we tend to concentrate on the immediate problems they face and attempt to resolve the situation only by building shelters or giving them food.

What we fail to spot is that the ultimate aim must be prevention, to stop these children being forced to live on the streets in the first place!!
