The National Council of Nurses and Midwives (NCNM) yesterday elected new board members.

Agnes Uwayezu was elected new chairperson, while Naasson Gafirimbi was elected vice-chairperson.

The Minister for Health, Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, who witnessed the elections in Kigali urged the new members to ensure that nurses around the country offer quality services to patients.

Commending the outgoing board, the minister also stressed the need for more qualified nurses  in the health sector.

"The outgoing board performed well and I urge the new board to also work hard for the benefit of Rwandans,” she said. The board has 15 members.

Uwayezu said she would focus on improving the quality of service offered in health centres and step up the campaign against quark health workers.

"We still need to create awareness about the council because many don’t know its functions” she said.
