INCUMBENT president Celestin Ntagungira Abega has been endorsed by his club Rayon Sports to contest for the upcoming Ferwafa general elections scheduled for January 5, 2014.
The Rayon Sports Secretary General Olivier Gakwaya told Times Sport, "We have endorsed Abega to enable him finish some of the projects that he was pursuing in as far as developing Rwandan football is concerned,”
Gakwaya was also cleared by his club to vie for the role of marketing officer on the executive committee.
Apart from Abega, ex-Kiyovu chairman Jean-Daniel Mbanda, Sports Empowerment Academy (SEC) chairman Augustin Munyandamutsa and former APR FC secretary general, De Gaulle Nzabamwita have also confirmed their interest to vie for the position.
The final list of all candidates vying for different posts will be unveiled on December 20 by Ferwafa secretariat.
Ferwafa presidential election will be breathtaking, one of a series of a hot-button that is ready to be pressed.
Ferwafa has seen only three Presidents since 1994. Maj Gen Jean-Bosco Kazura replaced Lt. Gen. Caesar Kayizari in 2006 before Ntagungira ‘Abega’ took over the reign on an interim basis, following the resignation of Gen. Kazura in 2010. ,
This time around five-or more candidates will give a shot at the federation’s highest office.
But what remains a big issue; is if the next president will live up to expectations. The fact that reforms are needed to take Rwanda soccer to greater heights, it means, the sport needs a qualified and credible gentleman.
For soccer to rise to greatness in Rwanda there is need for inspiring leadership that is absolutely committed to excellence, discipline and national pride.
