Pierre-Romeo Imfurayabo, aka Lil P the Romeo, is a teenager with many hats. He is an artiste and the producer of Inzozi Mpamo, a high school movie.
He is a second year student at the School of Journalism and Communication.
Born in July 12, 1992, Imfurayabo is an orphan who endured a disturbed childhood. While growing up, Imfurayabo always dreamed of being a renowned musician and he is still holding on to the dream.
The 21-year-old has worked on a few songs like Tubane Neza, Umukunzi and Shimwa Mwami. He recently ventured into movie production and launched his first movie at his school early this week. The New Times’ Sarah Kwihangana talked to him about his new production work and plans.
What is Inzozi Mpamo about?
This is a movie that I wrote and directed. It is about school life that entails school romance and the challenges students face while in school. It was more of a school project, though it was entirely written and directed by me. It was acted at the campus and all the actors in this movie are students and lecturers of University of Rwanda School of Journalism and Communication.
Why did you come up with such a movie?
The major purpose of this movie is to showcase what goes around school and how school romance can affect ones performance. Then I also wanted to give a platform to my fellow students to showcase their talents and also show the school authorities what their students are capable of.
Inzozi Mpamo was launched on Tuesday and it’s not for sale. We’re working on our latest project, which will be put out on the market.
So how did you come up with such an idea?
In my real life I like singing and acting. I studied TV production here at the school of journalism which gave me an insight into movie production and making music videos. So I did a school documentary on the life of students living out of school because we don’t have hostels at our campus.
You seem to be passionate about movie production; how do you intend to balance this with your music career?
I can’t combine all of them together though I will not abandon any of them. But for now am passionate about film making and that’s what I am going to focus on mostly
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I want to promote my movie career. In the next five years by God’s grace I should be someone who is known in this country for my movies
What challenges are hindering your success?
Well, the biggest challenge is luck of funds for my projects. I also don’t have a manager. I badly need one. We also lack professionals and trainers in this industry, which are very crucial if we are to produce quality movies.
Any last message?
I am appealing to the government and the private sector to support the development of creative talent, because there are many talented young filmmakers in the country with good stories to.
