Margaret Mukeshimana, 25, and her two children, aged two years and nine months respectively, drowned in Lake Muhazi on Saturday in what reportedly appears to be suicide.
The mother of five was found dead in the lake after two days of thorough search conducted by residents, police and fishermen. She was living in Gishari Sector, Rwamagana District.
Local residents suspected the deceased to have drowned herself and children in mysterious circumstances.
"We saw her swim with the kids and thought they were having fun. As you know, this is something that we do routinely -- so we never cared, but were shocked to hear that they drowned,” said one eyewitness called Musoni, adding that he saw the woman carrying the two-year-old child on the back, while holding her nine-month-old baby in the hands, before immersing deep into the waters.
The police are still conducting investigations to find out what caused the deaths.
