Rwanda beats Uganda, finish first runner-up in Zone V

Kenya 3-0 BurundiRwanda 3-0 Uganda

Rwanda national volleyball team on Thursday beat Uganda in their last game in Zone V World Cup Qualifier match played at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

The one week qualifiers saw Rwanda and Kenya join Egypt to be qualified for the last round of the world cup qualifiers.

Hosts Rwanda hit Uganda by 3-0 (25-18, 25-23 and 25-19) in a match that took one hour and half, which means Rwanda lost just one game against Egypt by 3-1, making the host finishing as the first runner up. Kenya beat Burundi by 3-0 to secure the second runner up position behind Egypt and Rwanda respectively.

Rwanda started with a win over Burundi 3-0, before loosing to group giants, Egypt. Paul Bitok’s men recovered by beating Kenya 3-2 and later Uganda.

The victory against Uganda on Saturday increases Rwanda’s hopes for good results in the next round where they meet hosts Cameroon, Algeria, Nigeria and Gabon while Kenya will be at the same group with African champions Egypt in Pool 2 with Botswana, Zambia and expected Zone 2 runners-up. Pool 3 is comprised of Tunisia, Seychelles Congo Brazzaville, Niger and the expected Zone 2 winners.
