The Electricity, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) has scrapped a monthly charge of Rwf500 for the prepayment meter "Cash Power”.The decision follows last year’s National Dialogue’s proposal to revise electricity charges, according to EWSA."EWSA would like to inform the public that after consultation with its stakeholders and based on the objective of facilitation to access and use of electricity to all for both urban and rural areas, the monthly electricity meter charges will be scraped with effect from December 1, 2013,” Ntare Karitanyi, the Director General of EWSA said. The country plans to connect at least 70% of the households to electricity by 2017, through several ambitious power generation projects like the methane gas project on Lake Kivu that is expected to supply 100 mega watts of electricity. The Cabinet recently approved the split of EWSA into two companies to manage energy and water resources independent of each other. The move is aimed at improving service delivery.
