Rwanda’s female hip- hop star, Grace Abayizera, whose stage name is Young Grace, tells Society Magazine’s Doreen Umutesi about her tom boy look in the fashion world. The 20-year-old encourages Rwandan girls to dress decently. How would you describe your dress sense? I will have to admit that I dress more like a boy than a girl. It’s my nature; I can’t attribute it to anything. What’s your favourite clothing item? I feel more comfortable when I’m dressed in trousers than in dresses or skirts. When I’m at home or school I dress up in dark colours but if I’m to go on stage I dress up in bright coloursWhere do you shop for clothes? I have some guy who gets me clothes but of late I love the Kitegi. I have a designer who makes me clothes based on the designs I want. What do you consider when shopping for clothes? I consider comfort when shopping for clothes. If an outfit is fitting and is appealing to my eyes, I will definitely buy it without hesitation. What is your favourite fashion accessory? It’s weird but true, my favourite fashion accessory is a baseball cap maybe to pull off my tom boy look. What is your favourite clothing item on a guy? My favourite clothing on a guy is his shoes. I know it is cliché that you can know that a guy is neat in every thing they do based on his shoes but it’s somehow true. What’s your favourite scent? I love Shirley May’s Love More perfume because it has a mild scent but lasts long. Any fashion advice? One can dress in any way they want but they should be decent. Decency says a lot about someone. I wish to advise my Rwandan sisters to dress up decently because that’s all that matters.
