Three top Leaders in Rusizi District have resigned their positions in a move that caught many observers by surprise. The resignation of the trio follows a wave of ‘massive’ resignations that have sent many tongues wagging.Marcel Habyarimana, the district vice-mayor for economic affairs, Francoise Nirere, the vice-mayor for social affairs and Albert Ndemeye, the district Executive secretary, stepped down last weekend.Sources told The New Times that the trio submitted their resignation letters last Friday. An emergency meeting which brought together members of the District Advisory Council was called on Sunday and approved their resignations, according to reliable sources. It is not yet clear what is behind the spate of resignations as the leaders have cited ‘personal reasons’ for their decisions.By press time, it remained unclear if the trio acted together or whether their resignations were a mere coincidence.Efforts to talk to the district mayor were futile by the time we went to press as he said he was caught up in a meeting. The chairperson of Rusizi District Advisory Council, Symphorien Kamanzi, was also not available for a comment, as he said he was also attending a meeting. However, in a brief interview with The New Times, former Executive Secretary Albert Ndemeye, said he resigned for ‘personal reasons.”"Time comes when you feel you have done your best and need to give room to others so they can also contribute to building the country,” Ndemeye said.Ndemeye had served in the position for about one-and-a half years. He said he is happy with the achievements that the district attained during his tenure, noting that relations between  him, other staff members, district residents and all partners have ‘been very good’ during his tenure.Habyarimana declined to comment, when contacted while Nirere did not return our numerous calls.
