KOMERA centre for handicapped children gets five dairy cattle

Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD) has donated five dairy cows to Rehabilitation for Life Centre, commonly known as KOMERA.

Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD) has donated five dairy cows to Rehabilitation for Life Centre, commonly known as KOMERA. The centre, located in Mushubati, Rutsiro District in the Western Province, looks after needy handicapped children.Benjamin Manzi, the BRD director for investment, said the Friesian cattle worth Rwf5m will enable the centre to start an income generating project and become self-sustainable, as well as provide milk to improve the children’s nutrition."We are confident that this project will greatly enhance KOMERA’s sustainability efforts, improve nutrition of the children and contribute towards poverty eradication in line with the second phase of the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy,” said Manzi while handing over the cattle to the centre management on Wednesday.He added that the bank’s corporate social investment initiatives are geared at promoting sustainable development of the communities in which it operates.Munyamahoro Patrick, the Mushubati sector executive secretary, thanked the bank, saying the donation will benefit the whole community. "These cows will help spur socio-economic development, improve milk production and revenues, as well as provide manure for agriculture and supplement the Girinka programme,” said Munyamahoro.The centre supports 117 handicapped children with various mental disorders, trauma and hearing impairment, Rev. Father Eugene Murenzi, the founder, said. It also supports other handicapped children and special needs people from the surrounding community.
