Police in Kayonza District, Eastern Province are holding a 29-year-old man for allegedly killing his own three-month old baby.

The police identified the suspect as Emmanuel Sunday. They are also holding Sunday’s aunt, Appolinarie Mukamutara, as an accomplice. Both suspects are residents of Rukara sector in the district.

Peter Nkongori, a police officer attached to Kayonza police station confirmed the arrests of the duo when contacted on Thursday by telephone.

The crime is said to have occured on Thursday night. Area residents said that Sunday had denied being the father of the child and refused to provide support.

The baby’s mother had reportedly pleaded with Sunday to accept the responsibility. Later, the mother, Uwamaria Kery, brought the child to Sunday’s home against the man’s will.

"She dumped the kid and ran away. Sunday was furious and took the baby to the bush where the child died three hours later,” an eyewitness claimed.

Mukamutara is said to have assisted with the murder. Sources say Sunday’s neighbours were monitoring the suspects’ movements and later tipped off the authorities.

Another eyewitness, Fatuma Mwiza, alleges that she saw Sunday and Mukamutara going out carrying the baby but returned hours later without the infant.

"They had told me the baby was being taken to Gahini Hospital for treatment,” Mwiza claims.

"Had I known that Sunday and Mukamutara would kill my baby, I would not have taken the kid to them,” the deceased’s mother lamented. On interrogation, Sunday and Mukamutara reportedly admitted to killing the baby.
