Rwiyamirira wins MTN Golf Open title

David Rwiyamirira returned the best scores of 67 Net on Sunday to win the 2013 two-day MTN-Rwanda Open tournament at the Kigali Golf Course in Nyarutarama.The winner was in the main Group (One) that also included Jack Kayonga and Innocent Rutamu, who carded 69 Net and 71 Net to finish second and third respectively. It is Rwiyamirira’s first major trophy.Unlike the previous editions, this year’s tournament, according to the organisers, the Kigali Golf Club, was a special event because it coincides with the sponsor’s (MTN-Rwanda) 15th anniversary since they opened doors in Rwanda. The two-day event was teed off (ceremonial) on Saturday morning by MTN-Rwanda’s new Chief Executive Officer Ebenezer Asante. Group Two was won by Kim K. Sang, who carded 66 Net, while Charles Kagombe and Dr. Richard Gakuba scored 69 Net and 71 Net to take second and third place in that order.Sakwa, Mike Bayingana and Nikhil Rawal finished first, second and third with scores of 66 Net, 68 Net and 71 Net, respectively in Group Three."This year’s tournament is a special one and we’re glad that it has attracted such a big field of over 80 golfers, that is a big number,” said MTN-Rwanda’s head of Sponsorship and Promotion, Allain Numa.The Ladies category was won by Alice Rwigema, who returned with the best scores of 66 Net, beating Jenny Linda and Jackie Kwesiga into second and third places with 69 Net and 70 Net, respectively.Among the over 80 golfers, ten came from neighboring Uganda as well as eight Rwanda national team players, who competed in their special group, which was dominated by Aloys Nsabimana.Nsabimana is relatively new on the team but managed to beat his most experienced rivals with a gross score of 158 over the two days, one shot better than Patrick Uwomukiza, who came in second place.Aphrodis Nyirinkwaya and Ronald Nkurunziza tied for third place with 106, while Francois Habimana came in fifth position with 162.
