The government has reiterated its commitment to help boost agriculture production in the country. Though the government is putting in place mechanisms to improve agro-output, every Rwandan has a role to play to supplement these efforts. Over 80 per cent of the population is employed and depends on agriculture for a livelihood. That’s why everyone’s contribution is vital to make these efforts fruitful. This notwithstanding, the government still has a lot to do to make the sector export-focused. How are agro-processors being supported to improve their operations and product quality, for example? Do we have a national industry-focus strategy that is understood by everyone? Does the country have guidelines on agro-processing or an export-focused plan that ensures farmers and players along the value chain get the necessary support? How have earlier efforts that promote the same performed? Do farmers get genuine inputs timely? Are the extension staff doing their job, and how can they be helped to improve? Many issues still abound and should be addressed if the new drives are going to boost agriculture productivity. We should  ask the hard questions, and certify that sector policies are in line with the current national aspirations. Where there is need for realignment of strategy, all efforts must be put in place to make this possible. This will ensure that the millions of Rwandans in the sector do not labour in vain. Issues like lack of extension staff or agro-inputs that still dog the sector should be addressed. Farmers should also be encouraged to diversify and take on new high-yielding, marketable and high-value crops and animals. Also, modern farming is the way to go if the country and farmers are to reap from their labour. This is no easy task, but with concerted efforts it can be achieved. So, what is your contribution towards the realisation of this noble drive?
