Food prices have sharply dropped in the major markets in the City of Kigali and the Northern Province.Irish potatoes, one of the main staple foods in Rwanda, cost as low as Rwf100 a kilo, down from Rwf300 at the beginning of last week. Peas are at between Rwf400 and Rwf600 per kilogramme in Gakenke and Base markets, respectively. They cost Rwf1,000 in most city markets from Rw3,000 a few weeks back, while a kilogramme of mangoes costs Rwf1,000 in Kimironko, Remera, and Nyarugenge markets from Rwf1,400 recently.Passion fruits are at between Rwf1,000 and Rwf1,200 from Rwf1,500, carrots cost Rwf500 per kilo from Rwf700 last week, while tree tomatoes (ebinyomoro)are Rwf1,300 a kilo from Rwf1,400 last week. Théophie Majyambere, an Irish potato trader in Kimironko Market, attributed the decline to oversupply. "There was a bumper harvest in Musanze and Rubavu the main producers of the crop,” he said.
